Visas for Studying English in Edinburgh

Entry arrangements for an English-study visit to Edinburgh, from short courses to longer stays.

An English-study visit brings together the course itself, arrangements for entering the UK and, for some applications, evidence of English ability.

Courses up to 6 months

The UK Government's guidance on visiting the UK to study requires proof of acceptance onto a course provided by an accredited UK institution. The course must be no more than 6 months long, although a distance-learning course can last longer.

The guidance also restricts the type of institution: it cannot be an academy or a state-funded school unless the student is on an Erasmus+ placement.

Most study on a distance-learning course happens outside the UK. The guidance lists visits for particular course activities, including induction weeks, face-to-face intensive learning, progress checks, and exams or assessments.

Longer English-only courses

UK Visas and Immigration's Short-term Student caseworker guidance, dated 11 November 2025, describes a route for people aged 16 or over who want to study English with an accredited provider for longer than 6 months. A person granted entry clearance under this route can study for up to 11 months. The English language course must not cover other subject areas.

Someone seeking to enter as a Short-term student must obtain entry clearance before arriving in the UK. The guidance says that an application for permission to enter cannot be made at the UK border. It also states that the Immigration Rules do not allow short-term students to extend their stay.

ETA and travel documents

In its announcement on ETA and travel permission, published on 24 November 2025, the Home Office says British and Irish citizens are exempt from needing an ETA. It expressly includes dual citizens in that exemption. The announcement also says carriers will check people before they travel.

For dual British citizens, the announcement strongly advises having a valid British passport or a certificate of entitlement. It links that advice to avoiding problems such as being denied boarding when travelling to the UK from 25 February 2026.

The announcement describes ETA as having been rolled out without strict enforcement to give visitors time to adjust.

English tests for visa applications

UK Visas and Immigration's secure English language test guidance requires a test on the approved list, taken at an approved test location, with a result awarded in the two years before the application date.

The guidance says the approved list has been assessed against Home Office requirements under secure English language testing arrangements. Only the specified tests and test levels are approved.

A named change took effect on 6 July 2025: LANGUAGECERT Academic SELT and LANGUAGECERT General SELT replaced the LANGUAGECERT ESOL SELT 4-skills test. The guidance says an existing ESOL SELT 4-skills result remains valid for 2 years from the date the test was awarded.
